A Brief History of Florida
The state of Florida was first visited by the Spanish, as early as 1513. The Spanish and the French both settled the area, and it was a contested area for some time until Spain finally ceded it to the United States in 1819, in exchange for $5 million and to give up claims on Texas. From there, Florida was a part of the U.S., and grew as a result. The U.S. government waged war on the native Seminole tribes during the 1830’s and 40’s, spending upwards of $40 million to drive the Seminoles from their land. The state of Florida did not see much action during the Civil War, though it did provide troops and equipment to the Confederacy during the war. Until the 1900’s the state was the least-populous southern state; over the course of the 20th century Florida would emerge as a major tourist destination, as its miles and miles of tropical southern coastline are ideal for tourism.
