A Brief History of New Jersey
- The area that eventually became New Jersey was originally settled by the Dutch and the Swedish in the early 17th century, though after the British gained control of the area it became the Province of New Jersey. It played a small yet vital role in the American Revolution, and afterwards grew into a major industrial powerhouse, especially northern New Jersey which borders New York City. It was considered a Unionist state during the American Civil War, though the state did not elect Abraham Lincoln in either election and many southern areas of the state actually supported secession during the war. It was the site of much racial tension in the 1960’s, with several prominent race riots being held in the state – one of the most well-known as right after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
What to Expect when Shipping to or from New Jersey
- Most of the major metropolitan areas in New Jersey sit along one of several major interstates, the most prominent of which is perhaps Interstate 95, which runs clear from Miami, Florida all the way up to northern Maine and then into Canada. I-95 is crucial to the entire Bos-Wash region, connecting major cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Trenton, Camden, Newark, New York City, and Boston via one straight route. This makes it so much easier for carriers to run routes along the east coast, and chances are if you’re moving from anywhere remotely near Interstate 95, a carrier will be able to pick it up quickly and get it where you need it. Moving into New Jersey from the western parts of the country will undoubtedly take longer and will usually be a bit more expensive, but carrier availability should not be too bad unless you’re shipping to or from the middle of nowhere. New Jersey is also a common area that carriers will pickup and deliver from instead of New York City, as it is more difficult for carriers to move through New York’s narrow streets and congested areas.
