A Brief History of Delaware
Delaware has been inhabited by peoples of European descent since 1631, when the site was first settled by the Dutch. Over the years the area of Delaware would be contested over by several peoples, but ultimately would end up in control of William Penn, for whom the state of Pennsylvania is named. Delaware was initially a part of Pennsylvania, though by the turn of the 18th century colonial leaders had decided that the Province of Pennsylvania had grown so large that the “Lower Counties,” as Delaware was then-known, were well-off enough to govern themselves. Delaware was initially reluctant to join in the American Revolution, thanks to its strong trading ties to Britain, but ultimately went along with it. Over the years the state has been reliant on agriculture, and was a slave state until the end of the American Civil War. Today, retail is more prominent than anything else, though agriculture and manufacturing are also still large components in the state’s economy.
What to Expect When Shipping to or from Delaware
- The state of Delaware has two main routes that auto transporters will travel on, as they pass through or close by most of the major population centers within the state. I-95 passes along the northern border, heading northeast from Maryland, through Delaware and into Pennsylvania. It is one of the most-traveled interstates in the U.S. and a popular auto transport route, especially if you are shipping out of Florida, which is very easy to move vehicles in and out of. Wilmington, the state’s largest city, lies right along I-95’s route, and is probably going to be the cheapest and easiest city to ship to or from in Delaware. Much of the southern part of the state is serviced by state route 1, which is a less-popular yet still traveled auto transport route; however, it will generally be more expensive to travel into the interior of Delaware as opposed to a city along I-95 in the north.
