A Brief History of Alaska
- The area that would eventually become the state of Alaska was originally owned by Russia. It was purchased by the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million – roughly $118 million today – and would go through a lot of reorganizing before finally being declared a U.S. territory in 1912. It became a state in 1959, the 49th state admitted to the Union. Alaska is particularly valuable for its natural resources – timber, natural gas, and petroleum are three of the largest sectors of Alaska’s economy. The purchase of Alaska was originally known as “Seward’s Folly,” as it was considered to be at the time a barren wasteland. Once Alaska became further explored the U.S. began to realize how valuable the state was, and further settlement was encouraged.
What to Expect When Shipping to or from Alaska
- Alaska is rather difficult to transport vehicles to or from considering how far away and isolated it is. Carriers won’t run routes through Canada and into Alaska, so the only way that we can move your vehicle to or from Alaska is via overseas transportation. This is naturally more expensive than any type of carrier we provide but it is the only method we have available to us and it costs what it costs, as unfortunate as that is. We can provide transport services to and from the port in the contiguous U.S., as well as transport to and from one of several ports in Alaska; however, we cannot provide transport services inside Alaska proper, as there are no carriers in the state we work with. You will need to either drive your vehicle to the port yourself (if you are shipping from Alaska) or pick it up at the port (if you are shipping to).
