A Brief History of Oregon
- Originally settled by Native Americans, Oregon was first explored as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (well, the northern part adjacent to the Columbia River, anyway) and slow but steady settlement over the course of the first half the century led to first an autonomous government, formed in 1843, and then the creation of the Oregon Territory in 1848. This gave rise to the Oregon Trail and the mass exodus to the west by U.S. settlers. Officially granted statehood in 1859, Oregon has grown in spurts, though primarily west of the Cascade Mountains, where most of the state’s 3.8 million residents actually live and work. The port of Portland, located near where the Pacific Ocean meets the Columbia River, is one of the busiest ports in the Pacific Northwest. You can read more about Oregon by visiting the state’s official website.
What to Expect when Shipping to or from Oregon
- When transporting a vehicle to or from the state of Oregon you’ll find that prices will generally be cheaper when you’re shipping from somewhere along the west coast. This is because Interstate 5, the primary interstate servicing the west coast, runs all the way from San Diego, California up into northern Washington State and passes right through several major population centers in Oregon. When shipping from east of the Cascade Mountains, however, most carriers will have to travel through Salt Lake City and catch I-84, if you’re shipping to Portland or its metro area, though they could also catch I-5 somewhere in California via other interstates. Basically, you’ll find that transporting to or from Portland will typically be cheaper than other areas east of the Cascades, as there is more limited access; however, it will usually be a bit more than other routes of the same distance because of how far many carriers will have to travel to get to the major population centers of the state.
