A Brief History of Massachusetts
The state of Massachusetts was originally a British colony and was founded in the early 17th century by Puritan colonists. The state has a rich history dating almost 400 years and today is the largest state in all of New England. Harvard University, which calls Massachusetts home, was founded in 1632 and is the oldest institute of higher learning in the United States. Salem was the site of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692, and the state played a significant role in the fomentation of the American Revolution and was the site of the battles of Lexington and Concord, often considered the two first battles of the Revolution. The state has played a major role in several movements over the years, including the abolitionist movement prior to the freeing of the slaves as well as the temperance movement, which ultimately led to Prohibition. Today the state is known for its business-friendly atmosphere and political influence, and is the home of the prestigious (and unlucky) Kennedy Family, from which President John F. Kennedy, senator Robert Kennedy and senator Theodore Kennedy are all from.
