A Brief History of Fort Collins
- Fort Collins sits about 70 miles north of Denver, the largest city in the state. Home to over 151,000 residents, Fort Collins is the fourth-largest city in the state and the home of Colorado State University. The city originally was founded as a military outpost, Fort Collins, in late 1864. With the Civil War winding down and Native American threats on the frontier still looming, the Army decided to allocate resources to the building and maintaining of Fort Collins. The town grew along the fort, and by 1867 the city was large enough that the fort was decommissioned. Today the old fort still stands in the Old Town part of Fort Collins, and today the city is centered very much around the University; it is the city’s largest employer and a major player in the city’s economy. What to Expect When Shipping to or from Fort Collins
- Fort Collins sits just west of I-25, a major north-south interstate in Colorado that connects most of the major cities together. Fort Collins has benefited greatly from the Interstate Highway System; though it grew rapidly due to its proximity-yet-distance to Denver, the population exploded during the 1950’s and 60’s, mainly because of the automobile and the creation of the U.S. System and eventually the Interstate Highway System that we all know today. The automobile brought a lot of people to Fort Collins and it is no surprise that today the city sits along one of the busiest interstates in the western U.S. Fort Collins isn’t as popular of a car shipping location, mainly because there are no major east-west interstates that pass through it, though I-70 sits just south of the city (it passes through Denver) and I-80 sits just north of the city in southern Wyoming. On the whole prices will generally bit a bit higher into or out of Fort Collins, and perhaps even more so in the winter when the Colorado snows start falling and carriers start avoiding snow-heavy areas such as Colorado and the other Mountain states.
