A Brief History of Fort Smith
- The city of Fort Smith is the second-largest city in the state of Arkansas, after Little Rock, with a population of over 87,000 residents, and also anchors the Fort Smith metropolitan area, home to just under 300,000 people. Founded as a small military outpost in 1817 during the initial exploration of Arkansas, Fort Smith was abandoned in the 1820’s and bought by a private investor, who promised the federal government (who owned the land at the time) that Fort Smith would blossom as a civilian town – and he was right. During the 1840’s and 1850’s, Fort Smith grew rapidly and the federal government re-established their military presence there, particularly to help deter Native Americans from raiding the blossoming town. What to Expect When Shipping to or from Fort Smith
- Fort Smith sits on the western border with Oklahoma, right along Interstate 40. I-40 is a major east-west interstate that many car shippers will travel along during their trips across the country, though the stretch of I-40 that runs through Arkansas, Oklahoma and further west is not as popular as the parts in the east, as there are few major cities west of Fort Smith, save for Oklahoma City. Fort Smith is the only major metro area along the stretch of I-40 between Little Rock and Oklahoma City, and is roughly equidistant from both; it makes for a good layover spot along that stretch of I-40 that some shippers will take advantage of, and with a metro area of close to 300,000 residents there are plenty of opportunities to find new freight into and out of the area. On the whole, shipping to Fort Smith may be a bit more expensive due to the fact that there’s no connection to major interstates along the stretch of I-40 that it sits on, which reduces access to other areas; however, it shouldn’t be that bad considering it’s less than a day away from both Little Rock and Oklahoma City, which do have intersections with major interstates.
