A Brief History of Fayetteville
- The city of Fayetteville was founded in 1828 and was originally known as Washington, though that was quickly changed to avoid confusion with another Washington in Arkansas. By 1840 there were 425 people living in the town, and by 1900 there were 4,000; today, the population of Fayetteville stands at roughly 75,000 residents. It sits about 50 miles north of Fort Smith, the second-largest city in the state, and is the home of the University of Arkansas, the largest university in the state, and the city is known for being a college town. It is particularly famous for its football and track and field programs, with the men’s track and field team winning no less than 41 national championships. The city has done a great job weathering the recession that has plagued the U.S. for the past few years, with unemployment lower than the national average thanks primarily to Wal-Mart, which has a large stake in the town, as well as the University of Arkansas. What to Expect When Shipping to or from Fayetteville
- Fayetteville sits 50 miles or so north of Fort Smith along I-540, an auxiliary spur off of I-40, which runs east-west through Fort Smith. This is the only way into or out of Fayetteville, at least in terms of the Interstate Highway System, which is what car transport companies typically prefer. There are a few different state routes that service the city, but typically shippers will travel along I-540 as it connects Fort Smith – and I-40 – with Springdale and Bentonville. Shippers will generally go to the area for a little extra cash, as there’s really no other way they can go except to turn back around and go back to I-40 from Fayetteville; therefore, if you’re looking to save a bit of money on Fayetteville car transport services, you may actually want to try shipping to Fort Smith, as it’s right off the main interstate through the area and requires less of the carrier in terms of drive time.
